Biochemistry
Nutritional medicine is simply the application of known principles of biochemistry applied to the clinical setting. Instead of treating symptoms with a quick fix patent drug, we endeavor to first understand the underlying process and then augment the body’s own ability to repair and reinvigorate itself.
Harking back to a basic axiom of pathology, all disease is a host response, meaning that the first breakdown of your immune system and the expression of clinical illness starts with a failure of your body to adequately fight off outside forces.
Nutritional medicine is the practice of repairing the body’s faltering defense with macro and micronutrients that are native to your own biochemistry.
Therefore, the use of vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, anti-oxidants and the like are used to strengthen the body's own enzyme systems.
In essence, we derive the formula:
Let your food and nutrients be your drugs
What We Use
Nutritional medicine uses a complex mix of vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, anti-oxidants, carotenes, bioflavinoids, botanicals and amino acids in carefully selected combinations and doses to catalyze your various internal biochemical pathways.
Playing on an ancient Chinese notion that the first manifestation of departure from optimum health is functional, then physiologic and then finally structural, we aim in many cases to operate as close to the physiologic level as we can.
We have seen a steady march in conventional medicine in the last few years to utilizing the body’s own enzymatic pathways.
To illustrate: we have seen a gradual acceptance of the notion that a significant percentage of heart disease is caused by the abnormal accumulation of the essential amino acid homocysteine in the blood which can then become toxic to the lining of the heart blood vessels. Treatment is directed to a more efficient processing of this accumulation of homocysteine.
This, then, involves, rather large doses of vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), folic acid, vitamin B12 and betaine. This all follows from a knowledge of the biochemistry and how best to aid the body’s own natural detoxification processes.
Optimum Health
All disease, and the very process of aging itself, is eventually a breakdown in the body’s immune system.
Nutritional medicine aims to fortify, augment and restore your immune system to optimum health.
In the end, optimal health is also the pathway to longevity and anti-aging. Fortifying and strengthening our immune system, means delaying or even evading the degenerative diseases commonly associated with advancing age: cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, arthritis and some cancers. None of these are inevitable even in those individuals who have strong family genetic history.
Genotype is the genetic predisposition to developing a clinical illness, phenotype is the overt expression of the gene. We can and do help our patients prevent this progression.
Nutritional medicine, then, is optimizing your wellness and well-being. To allow you to add life to your years not just years to your life.
